MENTAL LOAD:

WHAT IF WE ALLOWED OURSELVES TO BREATHE?

These two words come up often in conversations among adults, especially parents: mental load. It’s a concept that describes the state of constantly thinking about everything, for everyone, all the time.

The start of the year can also become a real challenge for mental load, particularly with the arrival of New Year's resolutions: quitting smoking, eating healthier, exercising more, and so on. While these are well-intentioned goals, they can quickly become a source of stress. So, to avoid feeling overwhelmed, why not rethink how we approach our goals?
Let’s choose short-term resolutions for a gentler approach and to safeguard our mental well-being: allow yourself time to breathe and take care of yourself, even in the midst of this festive season.

In fact, according to the French Mental Well-Being Barometer conducted by the AÉSIO Foundation in partnership with IFOP, nearly one in four French people (23%) rate their mental health as average or poor, a slight increase compared to 2021 (19%). Balancing professional responsibilities, managing the household, and sometimes forgetting yourself in the process does take its toll. Yet awareness is growing, and putting a name to this reality is already a first step.

So, how can we lighten this invisible weight? Good news: solutions exist. Today, we’re sharing practical and inspiring tools to help you breathe a little easier and regain control.

A NOTEBOOK TO OFFLOAD YOUR MENTAL LOAD

Inspired by this approach, here are a few exercises to try at home:

The "Did List"
Forget the to-do lists, and try a "did list"! Every day, take a few minutes to list everything you've accomplished. Take inventory, remember that no task is too small, and realize what you’ve achieved without focusing on what you didn’t get to.

The Mental Load Garage
Write down five things that are cluttering your mind (both professional and personal). From that list, choose one task to delegate, identify your top three priorities for the week, and set aside time to take care of them. The result: when everything is clear and organized, you’ll be on a path to serenity.

The Wheel of Life
Take time to categorize the different areas of your life based on your current level of satisfaction (work, family, hobbies, etc.). For example, you could circle the areas you'd like to improve in the coming weeks or months and plan the first small steps to get there.

  • Marine: "A day off while my child is at daycare is sacred. I use it to breathe, listen to music or a podcast, and recenter myself."

Want to make the most of your commute? Turn it into a break for yourself: a bike ride or some music can work wonders.

  • Diane: "When I feel completely overwhelmed, I turn off my notifications. That way, I don’t stress about being late to respond or do something. It lets me focus on what I’m doing, one thing at a time, and that’s OK."
  • Cléclé: "It doesn’t matter if the house isn’t spotless: do your best and accept that not everything needs to be perfect. And if necessary, delegate—even with professional services like Wecasa."

These small gestures won’t solve everything, but they show that with a bit of organization and a healthy dose of self-compassion, we can regain some serenity. Taking care of yourself is a necessity in order to take even better care of others.

TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF MEANS TAKING CARE OF OTHERS

Mental load is a reality we can’t ignore, but it doesn’t have to overwhelm us. Learning to say no, allowing ourselves moments to disconnect, and accepting that "doing everything perfectly" is impossible—these are all first steps toward a healthier balance. So, take a deep breath, lighten the load, and remember that every effort, even the small ones, counts in this quest for well-being.
